The Ganfield family name and their legacy on the Carroll campus is great. This scholarship honors the service and dedication of Dr. 威廉·阿瑟·甘菲尔德, who was professor of 历史 at Carroll from 1904-1915, and president of Carroll College from 1921-1939. 出生在迪比克县, 爱荷华州, Ganfield graduated from Cornell College and the McCormick Theological Seminary, and studied at the University of Chicago graduate school. He served as pastor in Green Bay from 1901-1904 before his service at Carroll as professor of 历史 and 政治科学. In 1915, he left Carroll for a brief time serving as president of Centre College. He returned to Carroll in 1921 accepting the presidency, a position he held until his retirement in 1939. Ganfield was a member of the Republican National Advisory Committee and in 1922 ran for the United States Senate, 输给罗伯特·M. LaFollette. Dr. Ganfield and his wife, Clara, had five children who attended Carroll; Dorothy Ganfield Fowler '23, A. Boardman Ganfield '24, Elizabeth Ganfield Laatsch '27, Ruth Ganfield '31, and Jane Ganfield '32. Siblings, Dorothy Ganfield Fowler and A. Boardman Ganfield, established this scholarship in their father's memory paying tribute to his love for and to Carroll. 每年, a small number of outstanding first-year students are invited by the 博天堂官方入口登陆登录 Department of History, 全球研究, 政治科学, 及宗教研究 to become Ganfield fellows. Students selected for this prestigious program will enjoy a wide range of special learning opportunities:

  • Fellows will work closely with a member of the faculty to design a curricular plan that will help them achieve their educational and career goals.
  • Fellows will receive a scholarship of $1,250. This award will be renewable for four years, provided the student maintains a minimum grade point average of 3.00 and continues to major in 全球研究, 历史, 政治科学 or religious studies.
  • Fellows eligible for campus employment will be offered positions in the 博天堂官方入口登陆登录 Department of History, 政治科学, 及宗教研究.
  • Fellows will be encouraged to participate in intensive learning experiences beyond the campus. For example, a student might study in Great Britain, Germany, China, France or Mexico. Students might also undertake an internship in an area of special interest and/or participate in a public service activity.
  • Fellows will complete the published major field requirements of the program. In addition, they will participate in a special seminar that investigates controversial topics. Our expectation is that this program will prepare Ganfield fellows to pursue lives of professional accomplishment. We anticipate that they will be among Carroll's most distinguished graduates.

Students eligible to participate in the 威廉一个. Ganfield Fellowship Program will meet the following requirements:

  • Student must be an accepted applicant of 博天堂官方入口登陆登录 for fall 2025.
  • Student must pursue a major in one of the following areas: 全球研究, 历史, 政治科学 or religious studies.
  • 学生必须得3分.0+ GPA and demonstrate financial need.
  • Student must complete a 威廉一个. Ganfield奖学金 application.
  • Applications must be submitted by January 6, 2025.

The fellowship acceptance is based on a first-come first-serve basis for students who qualify. As soon as the prerequisite number of participants have confirmed, other applications will go on a waiting list in case additional funding becomes available.
